Overview

The school is the center of statewide activity concerning journalism education in middle and secondary schools and student media in colleges and universities. Two associations are involved, N.C. Scholastic Media Association (NCSMA) and N.C. College Media Association (NCCMA).

NCSMA was founded in 1941 and has a history of leadership and service. Principal activities include regional workshops in the fall, statewide media contests and critiques in the spring and an annual institute, sports camp and teacher fellowships in the summer.

NCCMA, formed in 2007, offers statewide college media contests and an annual conference hosted on a different college campus each year.

Additional opportunities

In addition to summer youth programs, NCSMA offers a summer fellowship program for North Carolina journalism teachers and student media advisers. The application-based fellowships allow teachers to enroll in a one-week, short-term summer course with in-state tuition provided by NCSMA. Courses have included Teaching Design in the Secondary School, Teaching Broadcast Journalism in the Secondary School, Teaching Interactive Media in the Secondary School and Teaching Photojournalism in the Secondary School.

In the fall of each year, regional workshops occur in partnership with newspapers, colleges and universities on campuses from the mountains to the coast and take journalism education to hundreds of high school students and advisers. Partnerships and locations have included Appalachian State University, East Carolina University, Elizabeth City State University, North Carolina A&T State University, Queens University of Charlotte, The Charlotte Observer, The (Raleigh) News & Observer, UNC Asheville and UNC-Chapel Hill.
